— Office for Urban Innovation

A few weeks ago I was invited to participate in an interesting exercise: a one hour live session about a topic that is dear to me where anyone can join the boradcast, watch and ask questions. This exciting project is Think Commons – an online platform promoting debate and generating knowledge commons through open sharable creation. For the moment this project develops in two ways: weekly online livestream sessions and periodic meetings.

Think commons started thank to an initiative of Domenico di Siena in Madrid, this is why up until now all the session were is Spanish. This session was the first one in English and the ambition is to slowly incorporate more English speaking sessions. You can follow the live Think Commons sessions every Wednesday at 7.30 PM on thinkcommons.org. In every session, a different guest is invited to present a project, a research or a topic dear to him/her. Think commons is also a way to interact and mix knowledge between people coming from different professional backgrounds.

The InTo (The Innovative Town Concept for the future) idea and concept competition asked for an innovative and communal plan of an urban unit of 20,000 inhabitants. What should be the starting point when planning a new town from a clean slate? The following proposal creates a netwrok of interconnected ecosystems divided into sectors according to the existing natural and artificial environment used as energy and development sources.

MetaBoulevard is an imaginary project developed for the international design competition “NETWORK RESET” organized by MAS Studio and the Chicago Architectural Club. The competition asked for ideas and actions that can reactivate the Boulevard System of Chicago and rethink its potential role in the city. MetaBoulevard offers a participatory process by giving the local inhabitants of Chicago the possibility to reclaim the promenade. The project was awarded an Honorable Mention. It was developed with Clélie and Flore, and published on Archdaily.

When Chicago was incorporated in 1837, the motto ‘Urbs in Hort’ or ‘city in garden’ was adopted to portray the city as a beautiful gateway to the fertile lands of the west. Deploying this 19th romantic vision was the European concept of the Boulevard. However, with its American application, the Boulevard system precipitated a suburban exodus to the periphery, laying the seeds of future urban self-destruction of many post-industrial cities. Rather than a problem, this project catalyzes the rupture between the urban fragments as a potential stimulus. This project reconceives simultaneously the urban park and boulevards systems, by making a series strategic distinctions: 1. Opening Barriers, 2. Initiating Commonwealth, 3. Absorbing Influences, 4. Calorification of the Necklace, 5. Reactivating the Boulevards, 6. Reinforcing the Green Archipelago.

Social geometry experiment (photo: Cesarharada)

This imaginary project is a case study I have invented to conclude a year of studying for the part three in Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Architecture de Paris la Villette.
The aim of this year was to give some practical knowledge to follow the large amount of theories absorbed during the past years in the various architecture schools. It consisted of classes in project management, constructions basics, programming, office management and more. During that year I have worked full time at Philippe Dubus following various projects and tasks in different phases to get familiar with the general process of building in France, and regarding housing specifically.

The study case picks a project seen during this year and explains the phases, challenges, force relations, regulations and almost every part of the project, apart from its architecture. My idea by inventing a project was to use the knowledge seen at Philippe Dubus, and also while working with other architects doing interior design and multiuse competitions. The idea in co-housing is working with the clients, closely, in order to find a more adapted solution for shared housing.

Stortorget from the skies (photo: Christoffer Horsfjord Nilsen)

dreamhamar, a glocale collective and collaborative project for the design of Stortorget, the main square in Hamar (Norway), is the most interesting project I have worked on last year, and probably in my entire professional career. A unique, ambitious and creative project that goes beyond the “classic” participation by opening it to the global community through a powerful online platform, and by integrating it to a real design process.

I’ve been working with ecosistema urbano on dreamhamar since last April, helping to develop the project’s methodologies and to adapt it from competition phase to realization. For implementing and coordinating the participation process, I have moved to Hamar during 3 months.

Two weeks ago we have finished the first version of futurehamar - a book summarizing the participation phase in dreamhamar. During the next couple of months I will explain here the structure of the book, share some of the stories and methodologies I have written along with conclusions and things we have learned from this intense experience.
